Library Toolkit: Course Reserves - Faculty

Services to different patron groups.

Is the Textbook for Your Class on Reserve in the Library?

What is the Reserve Collection?

The college libraries’ reserve program grants students access to specific course materials that may be in limited supply such as textbooks, articles, films, calculators, and a variety of other materials.

What Can Be Part of the Collection?

  • Copies of books or other resources donated by a department.
  • Personal copies either donated or lent to the library.
  • Material owned by the Atlantic Cape Libraries.

What Can't Be Added to the Reserve Collection

Due to copyright law, we cannot put the following on reserve:

  • Books or articles obtained through Interlibrary Loan.
  • Digital copies of commercially published textbooks.

Can the Library Purchase a Copy of My Textbook for the Reserve Collection?

The library will consider purchasing the book if the title has long-term value and acquisition funds are available.  Please understand that the purchasing process can take five or more weeks and delivery of a title is not guaranteed.

How Do I Get My Textbook Added to the Reserve Collection

Fill out the Course Reserve Request form, on the right, before bringing material to the Circulation Desk. Using the form will ensure that submitted materials are connected to the proper course information.

  • Materials may be lightly marked during processing, including some stickering and tape.
  • In addition, wear and tear on the items is expected, due to heavy use.

After filling out the form, bring the books or other items to the circulation desk of any Atlantic Cape Library (bringing them to Mays Landing will speed the process).

How Long Does it Take to Process an item for Course Reserves?

AT LEAST TWO WEEKS!

If reserve items need to be available on the first day of classes, the reserve request and any faculty supplied reserve materials should be submitted at least two weeks before the beginning of the semester.  Reserve requests submitted after the start of the semester will be accepted.  However, materials still require at least two weeks for processing before they are available to students.  All requests will be processed in the order received.

What Should I Know About Personal Copies?

Materials may be lightly marked during processing including some stickering and tape.  In addition, wear and tear on materials should be expected for items circulating on active reserve.  Staff will try to assure the security of items placed on reserve, but the library cannot guarantee against or be responsible for loss or damage to personal items placed on reserve.

How Long Do Items Remain on Reserve?

Items on reserve will remain on reserve for the duration of the semester.  If the faculty member would like the items to remain on reserve for the next semester, he/she should contact Mickey DiCamillo (mdicamil@atlanticcape.edu) and request an extension.  If a reserve extension is not requested by the end of the semester, library staff will return library owned material to its regular circulating status.  Faculty-supplied reserve material will be removed from the library’s catalog and placed at the circulation desk, so the faculty member can retrieve it.  Material will remain at the circulation desk until the end of the following semester.  If the material is not picked-up by the end of the semester, library staff may add the item to the library’s permanent collection or the library may discard the item.
