When to Request Books or Media Through Interlibrary Loan

If an item that you want to use is not available in our local collections, we can ask another library to lend it to us.

  • Check to see if the item is included in the collections of the Atlantic Cape libraries or the collections of the Atlantic County Library System.
    • Selected libraries in the ACLS do not supply items to Atlantic Cape. If you try to place a Hold on an item and it is denied, please talk to a librarian. You can request the item via Interlibrary Loan, or we may be able to suggest another resource that is available locally.
  • For books, check also the Atlantic Cape eBook collections.
  • For video, check Films on Demand.

About Borrowing Books and Media

How Long Does it Take?

Many items come within a week, but the process sometimes takes longer, if the item has to come from a distant library. 1-3 weeks is an average turn-around time.

Where Do I Pick it Up?

At the Circulation Desk in the Atlantic Cape Library of your choice.

How Long Can I Keep It?

That's determined by the lending library, but most items are lent for at least two weeks. Please return ILL items on time, so that other libraries will continue to lend us material.

Need an item for a little longer? Request a renewal at least one week before the item is due for return.

How Do I Return an ILL Item?

Return it to the Circulation Desk or the book drop of any Atlantic Cape library. Media items returned in the book drop should be placed inside protective packaging.

What Can Be Requested

Easy to Get

  • Traditionally published books (print on paper), at least one year old.
  • Media: sound CDs, and video DVDs
  • Textbooks

Harder to Get (but we can try)

  • New books (less than one year old).
  • Non-English language items.
  • Reference books
  • Books available in digital format only (we might be able to get a single chapter).
  • Older format media.
  • Items held by only a few libraries.
  • Items not available from libraries in the United States.

Not Available

  • Rare books, manuscripts, and other specialty items.
