Carlos

Carlos

A 2023 TriBeca Film festival selection. At the age of 5, in his native Mexico, he learned to play the violin. At 8, he developed a lifelong love for the guitar. At 14, he honed those guitar virtuoso skills and his performance style working as a street musician and starting his own band. And at 22 — just before his first album was released to acclaim — Carlos Santana became one of the major discoveries of Woodstock, anchoring the famous festival’s second afternoon on August 16, 1969. A music industry legend for 50 years and a 10-time Grammy-winning global sensation, Santana continues to be one of the music world’s premiere artists. The electric documentary CARLOS utilizes new interviews with Santana and his family alongside extraordinary, never-before-seen archival footage — including home video recordings Santana himself made; concert footage; and behind the-scenes moments — as two-time Emmy-winning director Rudy Valdez (The Sentence; Through Our Eyes; We Are: The Brooklyn Saints) creates an intimate, rich documentary about a man whose sound casts a spell on fans who love — as one of Santana’s famous titles says— “how his rhythm goes.”

Miles Ahead

Miles Ahead

An entertaining exploration of one of music's most creative geniuses, Miles Davis, and featuring a career defining performance by Oscar nominee Don Cheadle in the title role. In the midst of a prolific career at the forefront of modern jazz, Miles Davis (Cheadle) virtually disappears from public view for a period of five years in the late 1970s, his musical voice stifled and numbed by drugs and pain medications. Dave Braden (Ewan McGregor), a wily music reporter, forces his way into Davis' life and, over the next couple of days, the two men unwittingly embark on a wild and sometimes harrowing adventure to recover a stolen tape of the musician's latest compositions. A New York Film Festival selection, the film received a standing ovation upon its debut.

Tibet in Song

Tibet in Song

Leaving Tibet after the Chinese invasion of 1950, director Ngawang Choephel was raised in India where he was surrounded by Tibetan refugees who instilled in him a love for traditional music. Returning to Tibet nearly forty years later as a musicologist, Choephel hoped to record what remained of Tibetan folk music. Confronted by the sounds of Chinese pop music and Communist propaganda, Choephel persisted in his efforts to preserve this native musical history, only to be imprisoned by the Chinese government as a spy.

SCL Punk

SLC Punk

It's 1985 and Stevo is that rare animal, a punk rocker in the Mormon stronghold of Salt Lake City, Utah. He just graduated from college with honors and now his life is a nutty roller coaster ride of rock shows, stealing cars, beating up rednecks and non-stop partying with his buddy, Heroin Bob, and his girlfriend. But with the scene getting lame and Stevo going nowhere fast, he has to put his punk ideals to the test. With a choice between "No Future" and Harvard Law School, what's a guy with blue hair supposed to do? Fueled by a classic punk rock soundtrack and hilarious, energetic performances from Matthew Lillard (Scream, She's All That), Michael Goorjian (Leaving Las Vegas, Hard Rain) and Annabeth Gish (Beautiful Girls, Nixon), SLC PUNK is one punk's madcap search for a way to grow up without selling out.

16 Bars

16 Bars

16 BARS offers a rare glimpse at the human stories and songs locked away in our nation's jails and prisons. The documentary follows a unique rehabilitation effort in a Virginia jail that encourages inmates to write and record original music. In the jail's makeshift recording studio, four men collaborate to produce an album with Grammy-winner Todd "Speech" Thomas of Arrested Development. As the creative process unfolds, these incarcerated artists must confront the traumas of their past, and music becomes the key to unlocking a new chapter in their lives. Two-time Grammy-winner Speech Thomas is widely considered one of the godfathers of conscious hip-hop. His band Arrested Development's 1993 debut album "3 Years, 5 Months & 2 Days in the Life of..." went quadruple platinum and achieved what few thought was possible at the time, establishing an Afrocentric alternative to gangster rap that was commercially viable. 25 years later, Speech continues to tour the world with his band and seek out opportunities to use music to address issues of social and racial justice. Starting in 2017, he set out on a journey to the Richmond City Jail, where he conducted music workshops with inmates. His goal was to shed light on the complex issues in our criminal justice system by bringing the voices and stories of incarcerated people to a larger audience.

Bluegrass Journey

Bluegrass Journey

In the late '30s, mandolin player and bandleader Bill Monroe had the idea of merging the lonesome sound of classic Appalachian string bands with the speed and melodic force of the blues. As Monroe put together a band that could play the new sound he heard in his head, a new musical style called bluegrass was born, and with the dawning of the 21st Century, the sound Monroe pioneered was not only alive and well, but gaining a whole new generation of fans, thanks to the success of the film O Brother, Where Art Thou?. Bluegrass Journey is a documentary which offers a look at the history of bluegrass as well as a glimpse of its current stars as they perform for fans and jam with fellow greats. The film includes interviews and performances from the Del McCoury Band, Nickel Creek, Jerry Douglas, Tom O'Brien, Tony Rice, and many more.
