Series 1: Think Like a Scientist
In this session, we will learn to look at evidence and form a hypothesis which is a smart guess about what will happen next. We will read the book Who Am I: An Animal Guessing Game and use clues to guess what animals are hiding in the book. We will fill up a cup of water and hypothesize if we will spill the water all over the floor when we turn the cup upside down. We will read the funny story titled CeCe Loves Science and learn about CeCe and her friend Isaac’s hypothesis for the question Do dogs eat vegetables? Finally, the children and their grown-ups will have an opportunity to form and test their own hypotheses about sugar and water.
In this session, we will sharpen our classifying skills! We will read the funny story A Llama Is Not an Alpaca and determine how small characteristics help scientists classify animals into different, unique groups. We will dump out a big bag of buttons and brainstorm how we might classify the buttons into groups. We will read the book Cheetah or Leopard, and we will learn why these two very similar animals are classified as different species. Finally, the children and their grown-ups will create their own classifications using a variety of interesting objects.
In this session, we will learn to measure! We will read the book Prehistoric Actual Size and use different tools to figure out the actual size of some dinosaurs. Then, we will read the book How Tall?: Wacky Ways to Measure Things and learn some imaginative ways that we can measure things. After the story, the children and their grown-ups will use some wacky tools to measure some wacky things!
In this session, we will learn to discover and create patterns using our ears, eyes, and hands. We will read the book Pattern Bugs and listen for patterns in the book’s silly, repeating words. Then, we will play a game called Name That Cricket, and we will identify different types of crickets based on the sound and pattern of their chirps. Then, we will read the story Teddy Bear Patterns, and we will use Teddy Bear counters to make the patterns described in the book. Finally, the children and their grown-ups will make their own patterns using a variety of interesting objects.
