Nursing Students' Guide to Evidence Based Research: Reference Tools

Resources for Nursing Students

Using Reference Tools

Reference tools are used when you need to get a good introduction to a topic, to look up unfamiliar vocabulary, or to look up quick facts. They can help you to get started on a research project, provide fast information in a clinical setting, or help you to study for tests and exams.

This tab has been divided into several sub-pages, to make it easier for you to find the information that you need.

Dictionaries, Directories, and Biographical/Historical Sources (below)

  • Dictionaries contain definitions of medical and health care terms.
  • Directories contain information about institutions and organizations
  • Biographies contain information about people.

Encyclopedias

  • Encyclopedias are used to get a good introduction to a topic or concept, or to find quick facts.

Handbooks and Guides

  • Handbooks are similar to encyclopedias, but generally explore topics in greater depth. They may also cover standards, best practices, and procedures.
  • Guides provide quick information for use in clinical situations.

Study Guides and Test Prep

Some of these resources listed here are found in the Reference Collections in the Atlantic Cape libraries, and others are part of our online collections. If you are interested in using a digital resource from an off-campus location, remember to log in first.
