eBooks: Downloading Ebsco eBooks

A guide to finding and using e-books at Atlantic Cape

About Borrowing and Downloading

Read eBooks Offline

When you 'borrow' Ebsco eBooks, you can read them offline, without having to be connected to the internet. You can borrow Ebsco eBooks and download them to read on a desktop or laptop computer, or to an iPad, tablet, eBook reader, or other mobile device (but not Kindle). eBooks can currently be borrowed for 7 days. At the end of that time, the eBook disappears from your device. You can borrow up to ten eBooks at a time.

Steps to Downloading Ebsco EBooks

  1. Download Adobe Digital Editions. It's free.
  2. Set up your free personal account with Ebsco.
  3. Identify eBooks you wish to use and download them.
  4. Open using Adobe Digital Editions.

More detailed help is available in Ebsco's eBooks User Guide.

Downloading Adobe Digital Editions (ADE)

  1. From the Digital Editions site, pick the download that matches your operating system.
  2. Download the ADE installer.
  3. Find the downloaded installer and double-click to install the app.
  4. You'll need to register your device with Adobe. If you already have an Adobe account, you can use those credentials.

If you don't have an Adobe account, you'll need to set one up.

Password rules:

  • At least 8 characters
  • Both upper and lower-case letters
  • At least one number or symbol
  • Does not contain your email address
  • Not commonly used

Open ADE and register your device.

Downloading eBooks to Desktop or Laptop Computer

Search the eBook collections and select one or more eBooks that you would like to use.

  • Click on download link
    • If you are looking at the brief description, find the 3-dot menu on the top right.
    • If you are looking at the detailed record, the button is below the book title.
  • If you have not signed into your MyEbsco account, you will be prompted to log in.
  • In the pop-up window,
    • Select what you want to download. Some books only allow chapter downloads, but for most, you can select the full ebook.
    • Select the format: either PDF or EPUB (some books are only available in one format).
    • Verify that you have Adobe Digital Editions installed.
    • Click on the Download button.
  • You may be prompted to select the location to which the file will be downloaded. It's a good idea to create a folder for your ebooks, so you will know where to look for them. Alternatively, you can send them to the Desktop, or the Downloads folder.
  • Find the file for the book, and drag it into Digital Editions. If you drag it to the DE icon on your desktop, that will work.
  • Open Digital Editions and find the book in your library.

Setting Up a MyEbsco Account

Before you can check out an eBook, you need to set up a MyEbsco account. This is a free service, and allows you to:

  • Check out eBooks.
  • Make personalized notes on saved items.
  • Save and store articles to your account.
  • Organize your stored research into folders for easy use.

Go to the eBook databases (or any Ebsco database in our collection)

Find the MyEbsco button in the top right corner.

Fill out the form to create an account.

In order to be accepted, the password you create must have:

  • 1 number
  • 1 special character
  • 6 character minimum

You must also consent to the collection of personalized data. If you have questions about this, be sure to read Ebsco's Privacy Policy. If you don't feel comfortable consenting to this, you can still read Ebsco eBooks, but you cannot download them for off-line use.

When you finish setting up your account, you can use your new user name and password to sign in.
